Think back to the 1980's and 90’s when as a child growing up you might’ve had a Nintendo or Sega games console or maybe a home PC that took up half a room. Perhaps a little later you had a Nokia mobile phone with a plan that only enabled 160-character SMS texts and where the only 'entertainment' was ‘snake’. If this wasn't you, maybe ask your parents and see their eyes glisten with nostalgia.


It’s fair to say, the advent of new technologies since then has profoundly altered the landscape of modern parenting, offering both challenges and opportunities. As children grow up in an increasingly digital world, parents face the dual task of leveraging the benefits of technology while mitigating its potential downsides. This reflection examines how technology impacts modern parenting, addresses some of the concerns raised by today’s parents, and explores ways to balance screen time with healthy developmental activities.

  1. Increased Connectivity and Learning Opportunities Technology has transformed education by providing access to a vast array of resources and learning tools. Educational apps, online courses, and interactive platforms make it easier for children to learn and explore subjects in depth. For example, coding games can teach programming skills, while virtual field trips can expose children to global cultures and historical sites, all from the comfort (and safety) of their bedroom.


  2. Enhanced Communication Smartphones and social media enable families to stay in touch, regardless of physical distance. Parents can quickly share updates, coordinate schedules, and offer emotional support. Video calls also allow for face-to-face interactions with relatives who live far away, maintaining family bonds and keeping generations connected.


  3. Exposure to Digital Risks The downside of increased connectivity is exposure to digital risks, such as cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and privacy concerns. The internet can be a breeding ground for negative behaviours, exploitation and invasion of privacy and children may encounter content that is not suitable for their age.


  4. Altered Social Dynamics Technology can change how children interact with peers. Online communication and social media platforms offer new ways to socialise but can also lead to issues like social comparison and decreased face-to-face interactions. Over-reliance on digital communication might impair the development of interpersonal skills as emojis replace verbalisation and short text messages replace meaningful and deeper communication.


Balancing Screen Time and Healthy Development

Maintaining a healthy balance between screen time and other developmental activities is crucial for children's well-being. Here are some practical tips to help parents create a more healthy balance:


  1. Set Clear Guidelines Establishing clear and consistent rules around screen time is essential. The American Academy of Paediatrics recommends limiting screen time to 1-2 hours per day for children aged 2 and older. Creating a family media plan that outlines acceptable screen time limits and content guidelines can help manage expectations and reduce in-the-moment conflicts.


  2. Encourage Physical Activity Integrating physical activity into daily routines is vital for children's health and development. Encourage outdoor play, sports, or physical hobbies that promote exercise and help children develop motor skills. The goal is to ensure that screen time does not replace physical activity but complements it.


  3. Promote Face-to-Face Interactions Foster opportunities for children to engage in face-to-face interactions with family and friends. Organise family activities, game nights, or playdates that promote social skills and emotional connections. These interactions can enhance communication skills and provide a counterbalance to online social experiences. Ensuring a few times a week the family sit down for dinner together and communicate (without screens) can be an incredibly positive and connecting experience.


  4. Model Healthy Tech Habits Children often model their parents' behaviour, so it's important for parents to model healthy technology use. Set aside specific times for screen use and tech-free periods, such as during meals or before bedtime. Demonstrating a balanced approach to technology helps children understand its appropriate use.


  5. Curate Content and Monitor Usage Parents should actively engage in curating content and monitoring their children's online activities. Use parental controls and educational tools to filter inappropriate content and set time limits on apps and games. This is particularly easy when a child has the same type of device as a parent – if that’s not the case (i.e the child has a Google Pixel and the parent an iPhone) then Apps such as ‘Family Link’ are great tools to ensure they are safe and only exposed to age-appropriate content.



It's important to incorporate educational technology wisely. Embrace educational technology that aligns with your child’s learning needs and interests. Many apps and websites offer interactive, age-appropriate content that can supplement traditional learning methods. Encourage your child to use technology as a tool for exploration and skill development rather than passive consumption. Your child’s school should be able to advise which Apps are aligned to your child’s needs.


Collaborate with your children to encourage offline hobbies and interests Support your child in pursuing offline hobbies and interests that stimulate creativity and critical thinking. Activities like reading, drawing, playing musical instruments, or engaging in hands-on projects provide alternative ways to develop skills and find enjoyment beyond the screen. 1. Cybersecurity and Privacy One of the primary concerns with technology is ensuring children's online safety. Educate your children about the importance of privacy settings, strong passwords, and the potential risks of sharing personal information. Encourage open dialogue about their online experiences and any issues they may encounter.


2. Screen Time and Sleep Excessive screen time, especially before bedtime, can disrupt sleep patterns. Establishing a bedtime routine that excludes screens and promotes relaxation can help improve sleep quality. Encourage activities that wind down before sleep, such as reading a book or practicing mindfulness.


3. Digital Literacy and Critical Thinking As children interact with diverse online content, fostering digital literacy becomes essential. Teach children to critically evaluate information, recognise misinformation, and understand the implications of their digital footprint from posts to images they share online. Building these skills prepares them to navigate the online world responsibly.


4. Positive Social Engagement While technology can present challenges, it also offers opportunities for positive social engagement. Online platforms can facilitate connections with supportive communities, promote social causes, and provide a space for creative expression. Encourage your children to use technology to foster positive and constructive interactions.
